What is an Alternative Wedding?

AKA Non-Traditional Wedding

If you’ve been reading about me and my performances you may have seen the phrase “Alternative wedding” or “Unconventional wedding”

You might also have seen that I occasionally refer to myself as the “Alternative Wedding Magician“

I’m guessing you may be wondering what that’s all about?

Here is my explanation for what an alternative wedding is and why I think they are far more personal than traditional weddings.

Traditional Weddings are a Problem

I never understood why anyone would want to hire a magician for their wedding. Unlike other big parties, weddings are on a very tight schedule. There is very little space within a traditional wedding for a magician to deliver great entertainment.

Because they are so rigid and copy and pasted, most traditional weddings turn out exactly the same. White dress, white three-tiered cake, staged family photos the whole thing runs like clockwork.

I found this extremely frustrating because it reflected something very similar going on in my industry, where every single magician I knew of was performing the exact same tricks, in the exact same way. (Which is a big reason why I perform Mentalism)

There was no room for creativity or self-expression within these events, even in the wedding industry as a whole there was very little that was different.

All of the prominent wedding suppliers I knew of were all selling identical products, every bride had similar bouquets and hairstyles. Every Groom had the same outfit as every other man in attendance.

It was driving me a little bit crazy.

Alternative Weddings are Awesome

Whenever I take on a new client, we have a long conversation about what their vision is. What they want their event to look like, feel like and how they want their guests to remember it.

This process came about because of a fantastic conversation I had during the creation of the very first alternative wedding I performed at.

The couple knew exactly what they wanted their wedding to be, they were not scared about anyone criticizing them for not following the traditional path. In fact, they wanted to start their own traditions.

There was no wedding cake, instead, they had hundreds of cupcakes each of them representing a different country they had travelled to (They were travel vloggers)

However there were flowers, but they were paper and made out of printed pages from their favourite books.

It was beautiful and lovely, and utterly them. No one else could have had that wedding and while there were some traditional parts to it. They only kept what they wanted.

That’s what an alternative wedding is, it’s breaking tradition to have the Wedding that you want. You only get one, why not make it yours.

I enjoyed hearing about the planning of this Alternative Wedding so much that I knew I had to allow the space for more creativity in my work and within the events industry as a whole.
